Reflections Devotional Week 12 Free

Free. There’s a lot of talks these days about freedom – what it should be… and what it is not. I have no qualms in admitting that I struggle with many modern definitions of what it means to be free.

 

Free

Some, like George Orwell, have said that:

“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”

Malcolm X said this:

“If you’re not ready to die for it, put the word ‘freedom’ out of your vocabulary.”
 

Former Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan chimed in with:

“If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking… is freedom. “(D.D.E.)

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.” (R.R.)

Free

And then there was Jesus.

He had a very unique way of explaining what it means to be free:

 
“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
John 8:31-36
 
The definition of freedom from country to country varies, and it changes with each generation that is born into this world, but Jesus’ definition is timeless:
 

“Hold to My teaching…” “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free”.

Maybe it’s the idealist in me, but with all the ‘crazy’ out there, swirling around my days, with every opinion being reported on every news broadcast– it brings me such ultimate comfort to know that my freedom is not dependent upon anyone except myself and how closely I choose to adhere to His teaching. Isn’t that such a relief?!

 
The offer of freedom that Jesus gives, is lasting- if only we will take Him up on it.
 
Free
 
 
 
If you want to have freedom, real freedom- I would say the answer is to start studying His teachings. Then HOLD to them.
 
Sometimes I wonder if we wouldn’t see more miraculous deliverances if only we would decide to not allow ourselves to be swayed from what we know in our hearts is the wisdom and way and the FREEDOM of the Word of God.
 
Free
 
 

In a day in age where everyone is fighting for their own definition of personal freedom, I want to chase after the only freedom that will truly make me free.

 
Free from sin, free from the system of this world, free from hidden agendas and temporary victories. Lasting freedom. Eternal freedom.
 
And it is available to you today too.
 

Pray with me:

Father, Thank you for your offer of true freedom. Today, I purpose in my heart to let Your Truth set me free. I know that nothing in this world can threaten the freedom I have in You through Jesus Christ, the Word of God. I set my heart to be tender to Your Teachings, and I ask that you would strengthen me to hold fast to them. Thank You, Father, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
