Reflections Devotional Week 21 Called

My sister, I’ve got some good news for you today: If you are saved, then you are called. Just what has God called you to do? Let’s take a look:

called

“Who saved us, called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before times eternal.”

What does “called” mean?

G2564 (Strong)-kaleō- (a) I call, summon, invite, (b) I call, name.

Another word study shares that God has called us to a “holy calling” which is  2821 in the Greek, klḗsis, and it means: calling; used of God inviting all people to receive His gift of salvation – with all His blessings that go with it.

Holy, hagios in this verse, means: set apart, different, in likeness in nature of the Lord.

called

In other words, we are invited and summoned by God Himself to a calling that sets us apart, makes us different and bears a remarkable resemblance to Him!

Too often, we think of being called in the context of a specific assignment that we must accomplish while on earth. While we each have an assignment from God, our greatest calling to represent the Lord Jesus Christ by becoming like Him!

Today, let’s  focus on the calling to resemble only Jesus.

called

Our world is filled with labels.

Everyone wants to label each other. What kind of personality are you? We’ve got a label for that!

What upbringing do you come from? We know what to call you!

What hurts and sins have you got? We can identify you from that!

What college did you go to, what profession are you in, which part of the ministry are you in??? Health foodie, junk food addict? And the list goes on and on.

called

Labels can, at times, be useful. But more often, they are used to define a person’s sole identity. I am not JUST a mom. I am not JUST a worship minister. And I am not JUST a teacher. Think about the labels that we, and others, have used to define us… they are not the sum total of who we are, so why do we work so hard to get them and maintain them??

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want any other human being to label and define me! Isn’t it interesting that the calling God wants to define us with is one in which we resemble Christ Jesus?

I think we get this wrong a lot in the Body of Christ. We like to say, “I am called to do ___________________.” And then we begin to arrange our life in a manner that pursues that goal of becoming whatever it is we think we are called to do. But the problem is that while we are so busy pursuing that title or label, we miss multiple opportunities to become more like Jesus Himself.

Imagine if believers truly accepted God’s calling to be Christ-like!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful is we would not seek for any other calling or label, except to become like Him? Wouldn’t it be amazing, if when someone observed our lives and spent time with us, they walked away saying, “That woman is just like Jesus!” Now that I am older and have some experience under belt, I can honestly say that that is the best possible title to obtain!

God’s purpose for us–His Grace for us, is to come under the calling of Christ. Is there a better calling than that?

To be like Jesus should be the calling we all are passionately and consistently pursuing. When we become like Him, our works will be laid out before us and the opportunity to serve Him with our gifts and talents will present itself. We won’t have to hustle for it, defend it or chase it– we will simply walk into it by His Grace and in His Likeness. Hallelujah!

Pray with me:

Father, thank you for inviting me to the greatest calling ever: to become like Jesus. To Your Purpose, to Your Grace. I accept this invitation with my whole heart, laying aside every label and definition ever given me so that I may embrace my new purpose in Your grace- to become like Jesus… the only calling I will ever need. In Jesus Name, Amen
